TC Pola: Gale warning cancelled for Vatoa and Ono-i-Lau

A GALE warning in place for Vatoa and Ono-i-Lau has been cancelled.

The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) confirmed this afternoon that Tropical Cyclone Pola intensified into a Category 4 system at midday today.

FMS director Misaeli Funaki said at 3.30pm this afternoon, Severe TC Pola was located about 270kilometres south southeast of Ono-i-Lau.

He said Fijians on Vatoa and Ono-i-Lau could expect fresh to strong with speed of 40 to 50km per hour, gusting to 70km per hour, easing in the next 12 to 24 hours.

The rest of the country can expect fine weather apart from isolated rainfall in the afternoon or evening.

Cloudy periods with brief showers and possible thunderstorms are also expected over eastern parts of the larger islands.

A heavy rain warning is also in force for Southern Lau Group while a strong wind warning is in place for the rest of the Lau and Lomaiviti Group.
