HIGH school student Shafika Bibi has always enjoyed the pageant scene and her dream was to be able to use the platform to highlight important community issues. Getting the opportunity to be a Farmers Carnival contestant this year helped her realise that dream and also gave her a chance to see behind the glitz and glamour of pageant life. “This has been a great learning experience, especially since we are raising funds to help educate underprivileged children,” the 18-year-old said. She said the humanitarian side of the pageant and being a contestant had been a gratifying experience. The eldest of four children, Ms Bibi is an arts student at Lautoka Central College and plans to pursue accounting as a career. Ms Bibi said those who wanted to join the pageant in the future and advocate for a good cause should do so and not be intimidated by the challenge. She is representing Lautoka Sector. The Farmers Carnival ends this Saturday. “I love being a part of this carnival. The girls have really become my family. I am also advocating for the carnival’s theme, which is ‘Raising funds to Educate Underprivileged Children” and we want to raise as much awareness and funds to assist with this.”
