NINETEEN years later, Royal Australian Navy Chief Petty Officer Maritime Logistics – Support Operations (CPO) Trevor Maybir, is back home.
CPO Maybir who is a Suva-born sailor is now in charge of ten sailors on the HMAS Adelaide, which is the Royal Australian Navy’s largest ship which is currently berthed in Suva as part of the Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2018.
“I’ve been to sea quite a few times, and served on a number of ships, before my current deployment to Fiji aboard HMAS Adelaide for Indo-Pacific Endeavour,” he said.
“I definitely enjoy the lifestyle Australia has to offer, but I miss the people of Fiji.”
While CPO Maybir was posted to Cairns, he had worked with a local acting agency to feature in adverts and TV shows as well as a small role as an extra in the 1993 movie Sniper, starring Billy Zane and Tom Berringer.
“My role as a guard in Sniper was the highlight of my acting career,” he said.
“It wasn’t a huge role, but I got to work alongside some big movie industry names, which was a great experience.”
Not only was the Fiji-born associated with Hollywood stars, but was also a guest with former US President, George W Bush.
“In 2007, I was honoured to be a guest as a luncheon with former US President George W Bush at the Heritage Centre in New South Wales,” he said.
“That has definitely been the highlight of my career so far – and it goes to show you never know who you’re going to meet through your service.
“I joined the Navy back in 1979 because of the travel and the opportunities it has to offer, but meeting new people is definitely the best part of my job.”
