FROM Gordon Tietjens going crazy over cupcakes to taming a wild stallion from Nadroga, former national sevens coach Ben Ryan’s book Sevens Heaven will give you an insight into what really happens not only during team camp but during the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. The book, to be released next week, is Ryan’s account of his journey to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games as the national coach for Fiji. Today, we bring an excerpt of the book, titled Kava in Levuka. Ryan is often heard calling out “talanoa, boys” during matches urging his players to communicate. His first experience of “talanoa” and also his first taste of kava was in the Old Capital. He also got to experience the “Fijian diet”, one of the challenges he had with his players.
