Have you ever wondered how the Grammy winners are chosen? The www.grammy.com website gives an insight of the process that leads up to the selection of Grammy Awards winners.
The members of the Recording Academy and record companies submit the music videos and recordings released during the eligibility year that they consider worthy of acknowledgment in the Grammy Awards process.
Screening
More than 350 experts in different fields hold evaluation sessions to ensure that recordings that are submitted meet specific requirements and have been placed in the appropriate genres like Rock, Jazz, R&B, Gospel, Country, Rap, New Age, Latin, Classical and many other.
The reasons for the screenings is not to make artistic or technical judgments about the recordings but to make sure that each entry is eligible and is placed in its suitable category.
Nominations
The first round of ballots is sent to the voting members in good dues standing. The members are then directed to vote only in their areas of expertise to ensure the quality of the vote.
They are allowed to vote in up to 15 categories in the genre fields, together with the four categories of the General Field (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist). The ballots are then tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte.
Special nominating committees
In craft and other specialised categories’ final nominations are determined by the national nominations review committees comprised of voting members from all of The Academy’s Chapter cities.
Final voting
The final-round ballots are sent to the voting members in good dues standing. Finalists that have been determined by the special nominating committees are also included in this ballot.
The final round allows members of the Recording Academy to vote in up to 15 categories in the genre fields plus the four categories of the General Field (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist). The ballots are again tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte.
Results
The results of the member’s votes are not known until the night of the Grammy Awards. Winners are only revealed when their names are called out in the awards presentation ceremony and the names of the winners are delivered by Deloitte in sealed envelopes.
