FIJI’S improved population and data count in the 2017 Population and Housing Census has allowed the country to be re-entered in the Global Gender Gap Index, according to the global report.
In the Global Gender Gap Index report published under the World Economic Forum (WEF), Fiji is ranked 125 out of 144 countries.
The rankings are based in terms of women’s economic participation, education, health and political empowerment from a scale of zero to one.
The data provided in the report stated that overall Fiji’s gender gap currently stands 0.638 and theoretically the closer a country gets to one on the scale, the smaller the gender gap is for that particular country.
UN Women Fiji MCO deputy representative Nicolas Burniat said it was good to see that Fiji was counted on this index.
“It’s good to see Fiji and 143 other countries globally included in this index as we need robust, consistent and well-informed data to monitor our progress against the SDGs, especially its fifth goal on gender equality,” he said.
Mr Burniat said their ability to monitor the implementation of these SDGs and to better inform policies across the Pacific required solid data to be analysed.
“Our ability to monitor implementation and progress of the SDGs and to better inform policies across the Pacific require solid and reliable age and gender disaggregated data, such as the one which is currently being analysed by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics after the 2017 Census,” he said.
