Lodoni stadium

It was done centuries ago, when 300 Spartans defended their lands against the Assyrians in ancient Greece.

Although they held united for a few days against overwhelming odds and were defeated, their staunch resistance during those few days remain legendary to this day.

The same could be said for the Ratu Kadavulevu School rugby players on Saturday, August 12, 2017.

This was when 150 teenagers, ranging in age from 14 to 19, came to the ANZ Stadium, saw their opponents and defeated all in one day!

What those 150 boys did for their school, their teams and themselves is now legend.

It is a lesson for all sportspersons, in whatever sport you take up, you must play to win! There are no excuses, even if you put in 200 per cent and you lose, it might be satisfying but it is still disappointing.

That the 150 boys that made up the six teams had the fortitude, attitude and grit to win at all costs, spoke volumes of their preparations.

They all displayed the singular idea to win collectively on that one single day. And age group after age group they persevered! Arguments are heard on the day about the referees and lines men’s decisions but you make your own luck.

Next year’s schools rugby finals is 12 months away, but for that one single Saturday — August 12, 2017, the students of Ratu Kadavulevu School, former scholars, families and villages in Tailevu North know for a fact that the national grounds at Laucala Bay was, for a brief single day, known as Lodoni stadium!
