U16 girls football: New Caledonia wary of Fiji

Update: 12:17PM THE Vodafone Fiji Under-16 football girls’ team will play New Caledonia in the semi-final of the 2017 OFC Women’s U16 Football Championship in Apia, Samoa today.

Fiji recorded two wins against American Samoa and the Cook Islands while the side drew nil-all against Tonga during the group matches.

Fiji coach Marika Rodu said he was aware of the challenges against New Caledonia.

“They have been competitive in this competition, but we will try to knock New Caledonia’s game,” he told OFC Media.

“We will look for weaknesses that we can step into and penalise them.

“It is not going to be any easy game for us but we have been here before – in the semi-finals – but this time, we would like to take a step further and make it to the finals.”

New Caledonia coach Matthieu Delcroix said Fiji would be a tough team to beat.

“It will be a hard game because they came first in their group – if they came first they must have played well,” he told the OFC Media.

“I have seen some highlights of their game. They are very fast and have good technical skills.

“I’m feeling confident with my team though. They have good team spirit and they want to reach the final. They want to play for their country and show that women’s football in New Caledonia is great.”

The match kicks off at 7pm (Fiji Time).
