Here’s how you can create a simple tiered planter perfect for herbs or a splash of seasonal potted colour from www.resene.co.nz.
You will need: 25mm x 100mm timber planks cut into 12 x 600mm lengths, 150mm x 25mm fence palings cut to the following lengths: 600mm (x 3) 175mm (x 6), 25mm x 75mm timber for legs, diagonal supports and rear brace, exterior PVA glue, 40mm flat head galvanised nails, coarse sandpaper and sanding block, drill with 10mm drill bit, electric circular saw (or handsaw), set square, tape measure, hammer, paintbrush, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Glorious, Resene Quick Dry.
Top tip: Use the set square when assembling the unit to ensure boxes are upright and at right angles.
Step one
Measure, mark and cut the timber planks and fence palings to the dimensions listed above. Smooth any rough edges with coarse sandpaper.
Step two
Begin to assemble the three planter boxes attaching six of the 600mm lengths of 25mm x 100mm timber to the three 600mm lengths of fence paling, as shown. Fix with PVA glue and nails.
Step three
Attach the six 175mm lengths of fence paling to create the sides of each planter box, as shown. Fix with PVA glue and nails.
Step four
Complete assembling the three planter boxes using the remaining 600mm lengths of 25mm x 100mm timber, as shown. Again, fix with PVA glue and nails.
Step five
Measures, mark and cut two 65mm lengths of 25mm x 75mm timber and smooth any rough edges with coarse sandpaper. Fix to the top planter box, as shown, to create the back legs of the unit.
Step six
Turn the unit on its side and position the two remaining planter boxes as shown. Measure, mark and cut the diagonal supports using the set square to ensure the front legs are aligned to the back legs.
Step seven
Attach the diagonal supports to the planter boxes, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and nails.
Step eight
Measure, mark and cut a piece of 25mm x 75mm timber to form a rear brace.Smooth any rough edges with coarse sandpaper and fix into place with PVA glue and nails. Allow glue to dry.
Step nine
Drill drainage holes in the base of each planter box, as shown.
Step ten
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the entire planter and allow two hours to dry.
Step eleven
Apply two coats of Resene Glorious to the entire planter, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
The end result should look something like this:
