Commission will check rental properties

Update: 5:18PM THE Fiji Commerce Commission will inspect residential properties to ensure landlords adhered to the rental freeze recently extended.

Commission chief executive Joel Abraham confirmed this measure when when questioned on public concerns on compliance.

The yearlong extension of the freeze, which was announced earlier this week by
Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya, will expire on December
21, 2017.

Abraham said any increase in rent from the
period March 2, 2007 and December, 31 2017 is illegal.

Breaches of this legislation incur fines of up to $2000 applicable under the Commerce Commission Act 2010.

Rent increases are not allowed on any residential tenancy
and ground rent.
