Forty-six years down memory lane, Albert Park was the host to Fiji’s Independence Day celebrations.
The iconic ground has been today turned into a $17m “green heart of the Capital City”.
The speech delivered by our PM would have moved many as a big crowd gathered for the historic opening.
People were present to catch a glimpse of the refurbished Albert Park, which has significant and historical links to Thurston Gardens and the Government Buildings.
Today, this famous park will host our first Constitution Day celebrations. What a way to celebrate this important day, which will go down in Fiji’s history books.
I must say a big vinaka vakalevu to our PM and his Government for transforming Albert Park into the pride of the Capital City by restoring it to its former glory.
This project which was undertaken in conjunction with the Ministry of Local Government, the Suva City Council and Yanjian Group (Fiji) has given Albert Park a new look and has added colour to the Constitution Day celebrations.
I can imagine the joy when we get together at Albert Park to celebrate our Constitution Day, which has been blessed by the medal from Rio. The first- class facilities should enable us to host our dignitaries and guests well.
As we celebrate Constitution Day, let us work towards a united Fiji free from violence, hatred, abuse, discrimination and inequality.
I dream of a Fiji where people value and respect each other’s culture, language, beliefs and religious activities.
I dream of a Fiji where children and women are loved and respected. I dream of a Fiji where our rights are restored and upheld and we live in peace and harmony. I also dream of a Fiji where our girls and mothers are safe in their own homes and can walk on our streets without any fear.
My best wishes to every Fijian on this important day in our country’s history.
