A FORMER assistant court clerk appeared before the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon on corruption charges.

Keven Kalpesh Chand is charged with soliciting and accepting an advantage.

It is alleged that Mr Chand without general or special permission of the appointing authority solicited and accepted an advantage of $1600 from one Amit Amitesh Chaudhary between September 2017 and October 2017.

Defense lawyer Abhay Singh made an application for name suppression before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili stating that Mr Chand’s wife who is pregnant is under depression and is not aware of the matter.

Mr Ratuvili refused the application and said that there was no compelling reason for name suppression.

Bail has been granted to Mr Chand in the sum of $500 with two sureties who have signed a surety bond of $500 each.

The case has been adjourned to October 9 for plea.
