TWENTY Fijian women will have the opportunity to learn construction work through a new program aimed at upskilling and boosting the local industry.
The program is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity Fiji partnered with Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) supported by Asian Development Bank (ADB).
A statement issued by the Habitat for Humanity Fiji today said the participants were provided with guidance and support to study the concepts, management tools and techniques as part of classroom learning.
“The mentors then work closely with them to apply these skills to elevate the performance of their existing carpentry knowledge,” the statement said.
Project manager Michel Hill said the aim was to multiply the effect of this training by bringing together communities of women who would then be available as an informal network to assist families in the construction of their homes.
“Hence, on the job training will be integral to this course as Habitat for Humanity Fiji works to provide access to housing materials, house plans and assistance to the communities in need,” Mr Hill said.
The program known as CPC20112 Certificate II in Construction program for women is designed to offer students an opportunity to gain skills and qualifications in the construction industry whilst simultaneously assisting with the construction of four real homes.
This requires applicants to have basic prior knowledge in construction and building.
The 18 week program started on August 6 in Suva following construction of actual homes as part of practical assessment.
Participant, Maria Dau, 32 said she had always wanted to do something different, something that will motivate other women.
“I am not saying for women to choose the construction field but I want to be an inspiration to others and helping them be vocal about what they love to do and not let anyone else decide it for you.”
