A FIJIAN medical student received an opportunity to study at the world-renowned London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine after attaining a prestigious UK Government Chevening Scholarship.

Forty-three-year-old Sharon Biribo, will depart our shores for the UK later this month to pursue her studies in a Masters program in Medical Microbiology where she will be spending one year.

Ms Biribo said she chose the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine as it was known for developing medicine to fight tropical diseases.

“I chose that university because it’s one of the renowned universities in the world where they are developing medicine to tackle tropical diseases,” she said.

“The course subjects are relevant to the health problems and infectious diseases we face in Fiji and the region.”

The current research officer for capacity building and projects at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services said the scholarship would allow her to bridge the gap on the laboratory research work that’s not available locally because of the sudden rise of communicable diseases in Fiji.

“This scholarship will help bridge that gap and allow me to explore my professional interest,” she said. British High Commissioner to Fiji and the head of the South Pacific network Melanie Hopkins said it was an important investment for both her and the Fijian Government and her time in UK should be life-changing and career-defining.
