People are being warned to refrain from selling digital video discs (DVD) of the Fiji 7s rugby team matches from the 2016 Olympic Games.
FASANOC sponsorship and marketing manager Sitiveni Tawakevou said it was illegal for shops to sell it.
“They are reselling the games footage — this is illegal,” he said.
“It is illegal under the copyright laws in Fiji.”
The Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou said people should be discouraged from selling such DVDs.
“We are not aware of any case at the moment.
“Selling of such DVDs is a crime and police are looking into the issue as it involves the copyright laws of Fiji,” he said.
“This can be a criminal case. The police should look into it.
“The DVD shops know it very well that they are breaching the copyright laws but still they are doing it.
“The police have the power to arrest people. FASANOC and Oceania National Olympic Committee should come in and intervene.”
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said they were unaware of any issue at this stage.
“We have not received any official report about this.
“However, we are asking people and business operators to refrain from buying and selling these,” she said.
” If you don’t have the authorization to produce or sell copies of the match then don’t.
“We should be mindful of the implications continuing to do so will have.”
