Potato farming offers lifeline for villager

More farmers should take up potato farming because it is easy to plant and a good source of money.

Draiba villager Ulaisi Tovuga is one of four farmers from the village who took up potato farming last year and said he had never looked back.

“I began potato farming last year and I have found it to be really easy to do and the money I earn has been very good,” he said.

“Four of us from Draiba Village were provided with nine bags of potato plants last year by the Agriculture Ministry. From those nine bags, I managed to plant about a quarter of an acre.”

The Agriculture Ministry also assisted Mr Tovuga with selling his potatoes.

“I harvested one tonne of potatoes and from it, I received about $1000. That to me was good money and I don’t think I will ever want to plant anything else.

“I believe other people, especially those in villages like myself who have idle land, should start farming potatoes. Almost everyone in Fiji eats potatoes and it is one crop that will not lose its demand.

“It’s very easy to plant and maintain.”
