It has been reported that there is a decline in native trees (FT 14/7).
The Forests Department is looking to plant more mahogany and other introduced tree species of trees in Fiji’s degraded forests.
And native species are to be reintroduced where they are thriving.
Forest conservator Eliki Senivasa said the disappearance of native trees from the nation’s forests was a real issue because it was hard to find native species in downgraded forests.
“You have trees in these downgraded areas that are not native, but invasive species that were introduced,” Mr Senivasa said.
He added while Fiji had native trees, their numbers had been greatly reduced.
The department is looking at the mass planting of trees such as dakua, vesi and kaudamu.
Is it suddenly we realise that the number of our native trees are dwindling or did we already know?
As it is sustainability should be the name of the game, trees are cut down and replanted immediately. It seems we only know how to cut down.
But good on the Forests Department for checking and telling us about this.
So let’s all join hands and plant. Can the seedlings of native trees be sold to the public please?
