FNU upgrades course

SCIENCE degree graduates will be able to study further to become medical doctors with a program offered by the Fiji National University from mid next year.

This was revealed by Attorney-General and Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who said this was done in the quest to increase the pool of doctors that would remain available to Fiji’s medical system and beyond.

He said FNU would continue its physical and curriculum expansion.

A total of $6.5 million capital grant has been allocated to begin work on its new campus in Labasa. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said this would open new opportunities for young people in the North.

The university is expected to receive capital grants of $4.7m for a vet laboratory and $2.5m for the construction of the Fiji Maritime Academy building.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum stressed that the opening grant increased from $36m to $45m in order to attract top lecturers as well as full-time faculties, which would increase recognition and raise the value of the FNU degree in Fiji and beyond.

He said this was one of the issues that Government needed to ensure — that the quality in accreditation remained at international standard.

The Fiji National University was not able to comment on its allocation when this edition went to press last night.
