A ONE-year-old baby is admitted at Labasa hospital after allegedly consuming kerosene.
The incident has prompted another reminder from police calling on parents not to keep harmful liquids in attractive beverage bottles.
Police spokesman Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the baby from Bulileka Village outside Labasa consumed the liquid on Sunday morning.
“The baby is being admitted at hospital for observation after drinking a mouthful of kerosene at home,” he said.
The incident allegedly happened while her mother was breastfeeding another baby. The kerosene was in a juicy bottle and placed in the kitchen.
“It is advisable that kerosene and other chemicals are not to be filled and kept in fizzy drinks bottles to avoid such incidents from happening in future.”
Mr Weicavu has asked parents to keep away dangerous goods such as kerosene, janola, fuel, weed killers and herbicides.
“These products are to be locked and kept away from the reach of children.
“Parents and guardians are advised to be more careful and to see that chemical safety is practised at home for the safety of everyone, especially children.”
