SAUNAKA is confident of reliving its rugby golden era with the staging of the coming Saunaka 7s tournament next month.
The side has produced heaps of national reps including current 7s reps Pio Tuwai, Vatemo Ravouvou and Masivesi Dakuwaqa.
Team president Ratu Ponijese Lou Rayasi said the challenge was for the two Saunaka teams to defend their turf and to win their own tournaments as all the top teams have confirmed their participation.
Local champions that have confirmed their participation are Wardns, Police, Army Red, Army Nadroga, Natabua Gold, Dratabu and Saunaka Reds (formely Westfield Dragons).
“To revive the Saunaka tournament is a proud moment for the Saunaka villagers and the former players,” said Ratu Ponijese.
“We are glad that most top teams have also confirmed their spots and we anticipate tough battle during the one day tournament.
“This tournament will give our new players in the village to try and emulate the footsteps of their forefathers, fathers and relatives who have went on to represent the country.”
Ratu Ponijese said the tournament would display some of Fiji’s top players who had the potential the represent the country.
These players include William Ryder, Manu Laqai, Joeli Lutumailagi, Livai Ikanikoda, Aminiasi Nava, Joji Ragamate, Peni Gaunimeke, Leo Naikasau Jr and Jone Vota to name a few.
The tournament will be played on August 9.
