X Games legend, confirmed dead

Veteran X Games BMX legend Dave Mirra has died in North Carolina aged 41, police have confirmed.

Mirra’s body was found in a truck on Thursday (AEDT) after police responded to an apparent suicide.

One of the most decorated athletes in X Games history, Mirra won 14 gold medals between 1995 and 2008 and held a total of 24 medals across his career.

Authorities said he had been visiting friends.

Greenville mayor Allen Thomas described Mirra as “a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift.”

“He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon.”

An accomplished BMX rider, Mirra’s career X Games medal tally was a record for the sport, recently equalled in 2013 by Bob Burnquist.

He had two video games that carried his name and was one of only two athletes to win multiple gold medals across three X Games.

Mirra shared a record with Tony Hawk and Joe Parsons as the fastest athlete to win 14 X Games medals, accomplished in eight appearances.
