Exam paper leak inquiry

THE first day of the Fiji Eighth Year Examinations was marred by the leakage of an exam paper.

The Education Ministry labelled it as sabotage.

Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy said they were aware of the issue and despite the recent “attempts”, exams were progressing well with education officers as monitors.

Opposition member of Parliament and former Fijian Teachers Association executive Mikaele Leawere, in his Parliament speech on Tuesday, said some Year 6 and Year 8 exam papers were leaked to the public.

Mr Leawere outlined that these were the results of reforms by the Education Ministry.

“This is criminal activity and we have reported the matter to police,” Dr Reddy said.

“Please also note that Hon. Leawere was in possession of confidential exam papers well before the exam.

“That’s a serious offence by a member of Parliament. We have reported the matter to police and he will be investigated.

“As a responsible member, he should have immediately handed over the paper to the ministry but instead he was parading it in Parliament.”

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said police wouldn’t be able to divulge details and information surrounding the issue, but confirmed a letter regarding the issue was received by the Commissioner of Police from the Ministry of Education.
