Imran Khan, also known as “King Khan”, will find out on July 9 whether the High Court in Suva will allow his guilty plea to be withdrawn.
The matter was heard today following an application by his lawyer, Shayal Kant from Crown Law, seeking to have her client’s guilty plea vacated.
Earlier this month, he admitted to breaching a restraining order by disposing of a luxury vehicle – bearing the registration plate “KNGKHN” – that was under asset freeze orders.
Ms Kant argued that her client did not understand the nature of the offence or the consequences of entering the plea.
However, State prosecutor Moira Konrote argued that Mr Khan entered the plea of his own free will and therefore understood the consequences of the charge.
Ms Konrote also submitted that there was no prejudice to Mr Khan, as he had been represented by his previous lawyer, Jerry Dinati, throughout the proceedings.
Justice Rajasinghe reminded the parties that if the court rejects Mr Khan’s application, he will be sentenced on July 14.
