About 90 per cent of households in the Central Division are now receiving consistent 24-hour water supply, Parliament has been told.

Responding to a question by Hon. Vijay Nath, the Minister responsible for Water Authority of Fiji, Ro Filipe Tuisawau said the improved supply follows operational data and service monitoring.

“This represents approximately 94 per cent of households, which are presently receiving a consistent 24-hour water supply,” he noted.

However, the Authority acknowledged ongoing challenges affecting supply in some areas, largely due to infrastructure limitations and environmental factors.

“Disruptions are primarily attributed to factors such as ageing infrastructure, limitations in water production capacity, and the impacts of adverse weather events.”

Heavy rainfall was also identified as a key issue, increasing turbidity in raw water sources and reducing treatment plant efficiency, while flooding and debris damage pipelines and restrict repair access.

To address these challenges, the Authority highlighted several major infrastructure projects, including the Rewa River raw water source upgrade, pipeline replacements, and a new pump station and reservoir at Kalabu Road.

In addition, a planned $12 million Tamavua Water Treatment Plant upgrade is expected to enhance system capacity and improve supply reliability.

The Authority said these initiatives are aimed at ensuring all households in the Central Division eventually receive continuous 24-hour water supply.

“Government remains firmly committed to improving service delivery and ensuring that all households in the Central Division have access to safely managed, reliable, and continuous water supply.”
