Fiji Seismology – January 2025 Earthquake Summary

FIJI experienced 818 earthquakes in three months this year.

This was the response from the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) in response to queries from The Fiji Times about the scope of seismic activity experienced in the region.

The department said the Asia-Pacific region remained one of the most seismically active areas in the world, and Fijians must not take precautionary measures lightly.

“Fiji, like other nations in the region, experiences frequent seismic activity due to its proximity to tectonic plate boundaries,” the MRD said.

“While the majority of these earthquakes are moderate and occur offshore, historical records show that minor–strong magnitude events have impacted the region.

“Therefore, ongoing monitoring and preparedness efforts remain critical in mitigating potential risks associated with seismic hazards.”

The department said all 818 earthquakes recorded in the Fiji Region this year ranged from magnitudes 1.6 to 5.8.

“This does not indicate an increase in earthquake frequency but rather reflects advancements in monitoring capabilities, allowing for more precise detection of seismic events.

“Minor earthquakes occur daily within the Fiji region due to its complex tectonic setting and the continuous movement of tectonic plate boundaries.

“While the majority of these earthquakes go unnoticed, a few have been felt in locations such as Rakiraki, Vanua Levu, Cikobia Island, Qelelevu Island, and, most recently, within the Navua-Nausori corridor, including Suva.

“The most recent felt event was a magnitude 3.5 earthquake, which occurred offshore, approximately 26km south of Suva.”
