The Ministry of Employment has paid out $6.9 million for 590 pending employment and school accident cases so far this financial year, strengthening protections for workers and students, Parliament heard last week.
Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh said these cases were transferred from the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji under the existing No-Fault Compensation Scheme.
“Since 1st January, 2024, my ministry has been processing employment and school accident cases transferred from the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji under the existing No-Fault Compensation Scheme,” Mr Singh said.
He said improving workplace safety remained a key focus of the Government, with new digital systems designed to support businesses and employees.
“Improving workplace safety is also a priority. In partnership with the Ministry of Trade and relevant agencies, we have launched an online OHS portal for general workplace inspections and BPAS, to streamline approvals and reduce processing times for businesses.”
