The increasing number of strong cyclones like Winston, Yasa, Ana and Harold which have battered Fiji over the past few years are the direct result of climate change caused by human-driven carbon emissions.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said this when he commissioned the $38,000 grid extension project at Voloca, Macuata, yesterday.
He said it was because of this, Fiji has taken a lead role on the world stage to tackle the climate crisis.
“This means we are demanding action from larger countries abroad and leading by example at home,” he said.
“Most of our energy in Fiji already comes from renewable sources as we have dams across the country that generate what is called hydroelectric power.
“But we also rely on fossil fuels that we import and these are not only expensive, they are also terrible for the planet and environment.”
Mr Bainimarama said over the next few decades, Government would move towards other forms of renewable energy such as solar and wind.
“With the right policies and sufficient investments and political will, this will create cheaper, stable and cleaner energy.”
