THE Mamanuca Environment Society and Fiji Airports kicked off the new year with an ambitious coastal rehabilitation project that resulted in the replanting of 3500 mangrove seedlings in Vuda, Lautoka.
MES co-ordinator Marica Vakacola said the replanting exercise was one of the largest ever conducted by the two organisations.
“The mangrove area is very close to the two main villages in the Vuda and Saweni area,” he said.
“We found that Lauwaki is very close to the mangrove area and also Viseisei Village. So last year we had been working very closely with Fiji Airports and Viseisei Village to rehabilitate their coastline with mangroves.
“This year we moved to Saweni beach and extended our rehabilitation works along this area and it was basically initiated by the Ministry of Forestry and we partnered with the Fiji Airports to continue the project.”
