344 face job loss – Teachers given termination letters, says Kumar

A total of 344 teachers will be terminated because of the Government’s ‘no jab, no job’ policy.

This, according to Education Minister Premila Kumar.

“Unfortunately, 130 teachers were terminated under no jab, no job policy, 64 teachers will be given their termination letter this week as they have confirmed in writing that they will not get vaccinated,” she said.

“Another 150 teachers have requested time to get an exemption certificate from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

“In total, we are looking at 344 teachers who will be terminated under no job, no jab policy.”

Ms Kumar said so far, 7622 teachers were now fully vaccinated while 5110 have had their first jab. The minister said 4387 teachers were teaching Year 12 and 13 students.

“Thirty teachers who were teaching Year 12 and 13 students have decided not to get vaccinated and therefore they were terminated.

“We have replaced 24 teachers and six more will be replaced early next week.” Ms Kumar said the COVID-safe protocol has been finalised.

“Virtual training for the head of schools started yesterday so that they prepare school environment by adhering to health and safety measures.

“The Ministry of Health and Medical Services will visit schools to check the facility before clearance will be given for students to enter the school environment.”
