The 147th Girmit Commemoration will be held primarily online this year, as Government moves to reduce costs in response to ongoing economic pressures, including the fuel crisis.
The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage & Arts confirmed that the annual event, which honours the legacy of indentured labourers known as Girmitiyas, will take place on Friday, May 15, 2026, through virtual and online platforms.
Minister for Public Enterprises, Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage & Arts, Charan Jeath Singh said the shift reflects a balance between commemoration and fiscal responsibility.
“This year’s event will be largely held virtually to ensure we continue to honour the legacy of the Girmitiyas while remaining mindful of current economic realities,” he said.
Despite the scaled-down approach, a small commemorative ceremony will still be held at the Fiji Museum.
The event will be broadcast live on national television and streamed across social media platforms, allowing wider participation from across the country.
Mr Singh said the virtual format is also aimed at improving accessibility and inclusiveness, ensuring more Fijians can take part regardless of location.
In the lead-up to Girmit Day, the Ministry is working with key stakeholders to deliver a series of themed programmes under the banner “From Roots to Wings: Carrying the Girmit Flame Forward.”
These segments are expected to air during prime time television and across digital platforms in the week leading up to the commemoration, as well as throughout the commemorative period.
The Girmit Commemoration remains a significant event in Fiji’s national calendar, recognising the history, resilience and contributions of the Girmitiyas to the country’s development.
