Member of Parliament Parveen Kumar has been given until the September sitting of the House to provide proof of allegations he made against Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad earlier this week.

The Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu had directed he present his evidence in Parliament yesterday, but following a request from Mr Kumar this was deferred to September 11.

Mr Kumar said he needed time to get the evidence from farmers and other sources in the cane belt.

The matter will immediately be referred to the Privileges Committee if he fails to come up with proof on the day.

Mr Kumar had alleged Prof Prasad and National Federation Party candidates had made promises of increased cane price payments before the election.

Ratu Naiqama said Mr Kumar must provide proof that Prof Prasad did say those actual words, the place and date where he made such remarks.

Meanwhile, Ratu Naiqama said he had also received official communication from Sashi Kiran on a matter of prima facie breach of Parliamentary privilege by another Member of Parliament.

Ratu Naiqama said he would address this at a later date.
