His achievements are one of the worst in our history both economically, financially, socially and in our rights and freedoms in this country.

Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube claimed this of FijiFirst party (FFP) leader and Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

Mr Narube said this in response to a question from the media regarding comparisons made by Mr Bainimarama on his track record in government and the record of other political parties including Mr Narube.

“I for one do not know his track record, but I know this, his government has caused poverty to rise to 30 per cent or 40 per cent of the population,” Mr Narube said.

“His government has allowed the cost of living to rise very rapidly in the last few years, his government has caused unemployment to get to 30 per cent of the work force and his government has instilled fear and intimidation in this country.

“His government has abused human rights, a lot of human rights abuses in this country – so that’s his track record.”

Mr Narube said in contrast, his track record was quite clear.

“I saved this country after two military coups in 2000 and 2006, I contributed to the stabilisation of our finances during those crises.

“I was the governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF), I was the permanent secretary for Finance, I worked for the World Bank in the US. So, the PM is saying who is Savenaca Narube? I’m also asking if he thinks he has a better track record than I have, he needs to outline the track record.

“He needs to list that up so we can all know what his track record is. He overthrew an elected government.”
