Twenty individuals have been identified to be habitual beggars in Nadi town, said Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection.

She met with Nadi Chamber of Commerce on Friday to look at ways to address the issue of beggars on the streets.

“Nadi Town Council has identified 20 people regularly asking for money. Some of those identified have been integrated into their families or placed in shelter with income support by our Ministry,” she said.

“However we find them back on the streets. We have undertaken to look at individual case management.”

“I have called on Nadi stakeholders to rise and assist so we could collectively work to help those seeking shelter on the streets.”

Ms Kiran added the Ministry is reviewing legislation around children and parental neglect as we find vulnerable members of the family abandoned in the streets, hospitals and shelters.
