Over the last 24 hours, Fiji Seismology has recorded 20 earthquakes in the Northern division.
These earthquakes were of shallow depth ranging from magnitude 1.5 to 3.8.
“Most of these events are occurring offshore Vanua Levu along the Fiji Fracture Zone, which is Fiji’s most active seismic zone, as such, daily seismic activity is normal in this area,” states Fiji Seismology.
“Additionally, 6 earthquakes were recorded in the Savusavu Bay region overnight as part of the seismic swarm currently affecting this area.”
“These earthquakes ranged from M1.5-M2.4 with two back-to-back M2.4 events at 7:25PM being reported felt from communities in Wailevu West, Cakaudrove Province.
Fiji Seismology adds while these events are not a cause of alarm, they highlight Fiji’s setting in a highly seismic area and the need for preparedness.
