Nineteen new lawyers admitted to the Bar in the High Court in Suva this week were reminded that the legal profession was one of service, honesty and courage.
Chief Justice Salesi Temo told the graduates they would face pressure and powerful individuals throughout their careers, but must always fight for their clients within the law.
“Our job is basically one of service to the community,” he said.
“Serve the community, honestly, properly and courageously.
“You will be confronted by powerful individuals in advancing your clients right.
“The practice of law means you have to fight for your clients to the best of your ability, honestly and courageously.”
Justice Temo said the courts remained a place where everyone, regardless of status, could be challenged.
“His excellency the President has been challenged, Prime Minister has been challenged, Chief Justice has been challenged, ministers have been challenged, politicians have been challenged, rich people have been challenged, poor people have been challenged, criminals have been brought before the court.
“We see the lawyers come before the court fighting for their clients, and that is what you are walking into.”
He also warned the graduates about the pressures of the profession and urged them to remain ethical.
Justice Temo cautioned against dishonesty, saying some lawyers had been struck off for stealing clients’ trust funds.
“Be shining examples in the legal profession.”
