ONLY 18 of the 508 investigation files dealt with by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) resulted in successful convictions during the 2025–2026 reporting period.
This was shared in Parliament by acting Attorney-General and Justice Minister Siromi Turaga while responding to Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usumate on the workload undertaken by the commission.
Mr Turaga said FICAC received 407 complaints between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026.
“The commission dealt with 508 investigation files across its Suva, Lautoka and Labasa offices during the reporting period,” he said.
As of June 30, 2026, 182 investigation files remained active, with 125 in Suva, 29 in Lautoka and 28 in Labasa.
Mr Turaga said 141 matters were at the prosecution stage during the reporting period.
A further 19 matters were before the courts on appeal, bringing the total number of live court matters to 160.
He clarified that the 19 appeal matters were separately identified and not included in the 141 matters at the prosecution stage.
“The commission recorded 18 successful convictions during the reporting period.”
He said the figures reflected FICAC’s caseload and court outcomes for the relevant reporting period.
This newspaper has been pressing the commission on its recent string of unsuccessful court outcomes, particularly given the significant public resources invested and the vigour with which the commission pursued these cases, but is yet to receive a response.
