14-year-old student drowns in Kalabu river

Update: 11:00AM BARELY a few days after the Term 3 school holidays began another child has become a victim of drowning.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the body of a 14-year-old student was recovered from Waikalou River in Kalabu, Nasinu yesterday morning.

“The victim had gone with two other children on Saturday afternoon to recover his flip flops from the river bank where they had been swimming earlier in the day,” Ms Naisoro said.

“He attempted to retrieve his flip flop with the assistance of another 13-year-old boy, however, faced difficulties in doing so and started to call out for help before he disappeared,” she said.

This, she says, is becoming a worrying trend and the only way we can avoid more deaths from being recorded is if we ensure our children are supervised at all times.
