On average about 110 Fijians die as a result of suicide with an attempted case every 36 hours, says Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation representative Watisoni Nata.
Speaking at a World Occupational Health and Safety Day held in Labasa recently he said based on statistics from last year, cases had increased by 50 per cent.
Mr Nata said 86 suicide cases happened between January to September last year.
“Suicide is a silent and growing concern in Fiji and it is estimated that for every completed suicide, there are 20 attempts made,” he said.
“The youngest person to commit suicide in Fiji was seven years old and the date shows that more men are committing suicide and the age of victims gets younger.
“Those between 16 to 25 years old are the most vulnerable and it is estimated that every 36 hours, a Fijian attempts suicide.”
He said contributing factors included the impacts of natural disasters and the recent COVID pandemic. Mr Nata said a good and vibrant support system was imperative to support and prevent suicide cases from happening.
“Everyone plays a major role in this – religious organisations, business houses, government, civil societies and communities need to work together to address these issues.”
