The approval by Parliament to give $10,000 to each MP as a parliamentary duty allowance is an “outrageous act”, says Fiji Public Service Association general secretary Judith Kotobalavu.

The motion was passed in Parliament on Monday.

“If this is not self-serving, then what is it?” said Ms Kotobalavu.

“The association is concerned and strongly condemns the Coalition Government’s decision to vote themselves a pay rise while ignoring the struggles faced by the rest of the country.

“It is disheartening to see our elected officials prioritise their own financial gain over the well-being of the public.

“This outrageous act not only demonstrates a lack of empathy and understanding towards the challenges faced by ordinary citizens, but also erodes the trust between the Government and its people.”

Ms Kotobalavu said families were struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table.

“It is appalling that the members of Parliament, led by the Coalition Government, would choose to allocate additional funds to themselves.

“This decision is a clear display of disconnect from the realities of every day life in Fiji.

“The association, therefore, urges the Coalition Government to reconsider the decision and redirect their focus towards addressing the pressing needs of the nation, such as improving healthcare, education, and supporting those affected by the ongoing economic hardships, not to mention the additional 6 per cent VAT imposed on the working people of this country.”
