THE Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) has predicted only one to two cyclones will pass in Fiji’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the 2024/2025 season.

In its Tropical Cyclone Outlook for the coming season, FMS also predicted either zero or one of these projected cyclones to reach a severe stage, ranging between Category 3 and 5.

FMS said there was equal risk of cyclones affecting any part of the Fiji Group, and about five to six cyclones were predicted in the area of responsibility of the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre Nadi Tropical Cyclone Centre.

“Tropical cyclone activities in the Pacific island region are closely associated with the El NiƱo Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is a fluctuation of oceanic and atmospheric conditions between the eastern and western tropical Pacific,” the outlook stated.

“Upon analysis of the current ENSO status and selection of analogue years, it is concluded that, near average to below average tropical cyclone activity for Fiji is likely this season.”

However, FMS said out of season tropical cyclones could not be ruled out.

All communities in the country have been urged to remain alert and prepared throughout the cyclone season and heed all advisories.
