The countdown begins for the ZEG Kings Boxing Promotion this weekend with all eyes on the highly anticipated bout between Runqi Zhou and Junior Binnu Singh.
Zhou, dubbed as the ‘Fist of Fury’ will fight Singh for the WBA Oceania Super Bantam Weight title which also serves as the main card of the July 19 event at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
The Australia-based boxer who has fought 13 professional fights with a record of nine wins, three losses and a draw arrived in the country yesterday.
“I feel very good, and I appreciate that I can come to Fiji and fight again,” Zhou said during an interview with the media at the Nadi International Airport.
Fans have long called for the return of Zhou since his last fight in Fiji in October 2024.
Boxing enthusiasts wanted him to take on Mikaele Ravalaca, however, negotiations fell through, and the fight did not eventuate.
This opened the opportunity for Zhou to challenge Singh who was more than ready to share the ring with him.
When asked what he will do this time around and what fans can expect from him, Zhou said: “I just want boxing.”
His Sigatoka-based opponent, now known as the ‘Valley King’ is dedicating the fight to the late Ubayd Haider who was the last Fiji boxer to fight Zhou.
“The biggest motivation to fight Runqi Zhou is because he fought Nathan (Ubayd Haider). Nathan (Ubayd Haider) was just like my brother, and he lost his life in that fight, so I wanted to fight that guy and prove that there are other better guys in Fiji to fight him,” Singh said in an earlier interview.
Zhou, oozing with the energy of a man of a few words, had a simple message for Singh.
“See you July 19, I will do my best.”
The event will feature a total of 10 professional fights and six exhibition matches.
The exhibition fights are scheduled to open Saturday’s boxing fight card at 4.30pm followed by the main program at 6pm.
The weigh-in is planned for Friday at 12pm at the newly renovated podium at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva.
Other exciting matches on the fight card will see James Singh take on Semi Daloloma for the BCF Heavyweight title.
This will serve as the main supporting bout for the Zhou v Singh fight. It is also one of the most exciting fights in the program given the history and rivalry of the two boxers.
It will also mark their rematch after their suspension on December 2024.
Meanwhile, a female bout featuring Sera Bolatini against Connie Chan of Australia for the WBA Oceania title will also be part of the evening’s lineup.
