A self-ascribed prankster interrupted play for a third time in the test series between England and India when he slipped past stewards and ran onto the field before colliding with a player at The Oval in London on Friday (local time).
In an incident which raises further questions about the England and Wales Cricket Board’s security arrangements, the man – dressed in full cricket whites – sprinted towards the wicket with a ball in his hand and hurled it down the pitch before bumping into England batsman Jonny Bairstow at the non-striker’s end.
Bairstow looked stunned and spoke to one of the umpires as the intruder was escorted off the field by security to jeers. India captain Virat Kohli was also seen in conversation with umpires after the incident during the first session.
The man in question, Daniel Jarvis, is a YouTube prankster who calls himself “Jarvo”.
“A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault following an incident at the Oval Cricket Ground on Friday,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement, when asked about the intruder.
“He remains in custody at a south London police station.”
The man has breached the field of play in each of the last three tests of the series, wearing a cricket uniform on each occasion.
