Members of the Youth for Climate Action Program converged at the Lomolomo Beach in Lautoka on Friday to plant sea almond trees and clean the foreshore.
They were supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Forestry’s Lautoka office.
The youth officer for Lautoka and Yasawa, Karunagaran Nair, said the program engaged young people from around the country to participate in environmental conservation activities.
“Such as tree planting and waste management,” Mr Nair said.
“So, we like to encourage young people to look after the environment, take care of the environment and think of the future generations.”
Mr Nair said 150 sea almonds (tavola) would be planted on the foreshore with the help of the youths.
“We would like to send a message to people, when you are visiting Lomolomo Beach, to enjoy as much as you can, but you need to take care of your litter and dispose of it properly.”
Forest guard Temo Kotoilakeba said the planting of the sea almond plants was part of the Forestry Ministry’s tree-planting program to combat climate change.
“I encourage youths that it is not only when we come to participate in initiatives like this, but we can also practise it in our villages,” Ms Kotoilakeba said.
“When you have land that is not being used for agriculture or other developments, the ministry can assist in giving out seedlings for free.”
