Landslides caused by climate change, the lack of interest from youths and the lack of collaboration among development stakeholders are issues affecting the protection of resources in the province of Naitasiri.

This, according to Sosiceni Moce — a representative from the province. He said frequent rainfall in the province resulted in landslides, a phenomena that rarely happened before.

Mr Moce said the landslides damaged farms, and mahogany and pine forests, which in turn impacted the income of farmers in the province.

In addition, youths were losing interest in protecting the natural resources in the province as they choose to move to the urban areas.

“They have started to lose interest in protecting our resources, if they fail to do so then who will,” he said.

“These resources are for them and the future generations, we have done our part now it’s their turn.”

He said workshops and awareness programs were necessary to ensure youths learn the importance of protecting natural resources.

Mr Moce said when necessary developments occurred in the villages, certain developers failed to consult and collaborate with locals and other developers in the area which resulted in delays.

He stressed if developers wished to complete their work in an efficient manner, they must collaborate.
