For many young people in Fiji, the road ahead is uncertain — and for some, it is already filled with struggle.

This week, at Ratu Sukuna Park, Suva, a small but determined faith-based organisation set out to change that story.

The Voice of Youth successfully staged its first major public event, bringing together young people, NGOs and community leaders for a youth-driven health expo.

The initiative, described as a pilot project, united several non-governmental organisations focused on promoting healthy living and positive lifestyles among Fiji’s youths.

Executive chairperson of Voice of Youth and chief event organiser Poasa Batiratu, 28, said the organisation was committed to mobilising and empowering young people through targeted, community-focused initiatives.

“Most youths are trailing down the path of destruction,” Mr Batiratu said, stressing the urgent need for early intervention and positive engagement.

He said the organisation’s goal goes beyond simply sharing information.

“Our aim is to distract youths with something that is beneficial, likewise give them a sense of purpose.”

Mr Batiratu said participating NGOs not only share health and social information, but also provide training opportunities, allowing young people to contribute meaningfully to public service.

“We have a total of 100 volunteers on (the) ground that are youths.”

Voice of Youth, which has been operating for less than a year, has already seen growth, with increasing numbers of young people joining its programs. He said the training provided help equip participants with practical, transferable skills.

“Trainings were conducted for youths on how to interpret data and conduct consultations,” he said.

Beyond skills development, the organisation has been running awareness sessions addressing pressing social issues including mental health, drug awareness and HIV/AIDS.

“All the while, we’ve had sessions of awareness where talks from (Police) Inspector Donu, psychologist Leba Kania and representatives from HIV awareness programs.”

The successful expo marks a strong start for Voice of Youth’s mission to develop resilient, informed and engaged young leaders, with plans to expand the initiative nationwide towards the end of the year.
