Youths attend peace summit

THREE Fijian youths represented the country to the International Human Rights Commission’s (IHRC) first ever five-day World Youth Summit for Peace in Pakistan last week.

The event, which was attended by more than 140 participants from 83 countries, was organised by the IHRC in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth in Punjab.

It was held from December 8 to 12 at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad.

Broderick Mervyn, Anaseini Colaivanua and Edward Rakaseta were part of the dignitaries at the conference which aimed at providing a platform for youths to play their role in world peace, harmony and upholding human rights.

Mr Mervyn, the head of Fiji’s delegation, said in such chaotic conditions in the world today, there was still a huge quantum of hope and there was anticipation and prospects visible for success and triumph.

“Youth all over the world throughout the history has been a revolutionary force. It is a valuable asset and magnificence that can revive a nation going through hard times,” he said.

“The youths of a nation can do wonders if trained, educated and guided in an optimum fashion. Literally, it refers to all the human force in a nation lying between the age group of 18 to 35 years.

“In spite of being tender in age, youth always possesses incredible intellect, physical strength and wisdom because at this age, they are free from many prejudices and myopic thinking.”

Meanwhile, the summit also aimed at identifying the importance and role of youth in world peace and progress.

Over the past decade, there has been a growing recognition of the youth’s participation in economic, social and political processes.
