A 20 per cent increase in the Youth Development Budget for the 2025–2026 financial year has been directed towards strengthening youth capacity, expanding outreach and improving service delivery, Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Service Sitiveni Rabuka told Parliament.
Responding to a question by MP Joseph Nand on how the additional $689,340 allocation had been utilised, he said funding had been prioritised towards youth capacity building programs and personal emoluments to support effective delivery.
“In terms of program delivery, our approach has been deliberate, prioritising depth of engagement and impact over volume,” Mr Rabuka said.
He highlighted that although only two youth festivals were held this year, compared to four previously, they were more targeted and inclusive.
“The Youth Festivals in Naitasiri and Rotuma integrated youth symposiums, access to government services and mobile skills training and empowerment programs.”
He described the Rotuma initiative as “particularly noteworthy”, reaching 581 youths and supporting infrastructure development, including a hardcourt.
He added that outreach tours in Kadavu and Yasawa reached over 792 youths, delivered 150 certifications and supported 10 youth grants.
“A key milestone was the reopening of the Yavitu Training Centre in Kadavu,” he said, noting the facility now improves access to vocational training.
