The 2022 Fiji Relay Championship and season opener is part of the World Athletics program to attract young people to athletics.
Athletics Fiji development officer, former Fiji and South Pacific decathlon champion and Olympian Albert Miller said it’s a worldwide program to try and attract more participants in the sport.
“So we got funding from World Athletics to our proposal was to basically conduct national relays here,” he said.
“We’re grateful to World Athletics for the funding, basically funding transportation and other things, hiring of the facility.
“Looking at our competition we opted for relay because we wanted to try something new.
“With these kinds of programs we’re hoping that we can go into the different schools and introduce kids athletics and really just to expose the students to different activities rather than the same, 100 meters, 200 meters and so on.
“So this is basically you know we’re just setting the platform for our future athletes.
“Really the interest has been outstanding and, I must commend the different clubs and the different coaches for assisting in the development of the sport.”
Albert commends the Nadi and Sigatoka athletics clubs for taking part and bringing in a lot of athletes.
