THE traditions of Nakoroivau remain ironclad as the Naivisouira Clan mentors the next generation in the sacred customs of the chiefly burial rites on Bau.
The ancient protocols of Tailevu are being passed to young hands today, ensuring the vital knowledge of the clan survives the passage of time.
As the traditional gravediggers, or na ligatabu, conclude their work at the sautabu, clan spokesman Vuaniriti Ramanumanu emphasised that teaching the youth is now a matter of cultural survival.
Younger members of the clan have been working side-by-side with their elders throughout the week, learning the specific demands of the task.
For many, the burial of the late Ratu Epeli Nailatikau marks their first direct involvement in such a significant traditional event.
“We’ve included the young in our preparations so that they know how it is rightfully done,” Mr Ramanumanu said.
He noted that for the majority of the younger men, this experience is entirely new.
“For most of them, this is their first experience to be tasked in the chiefly burial.” The clan’s focus remains on precision and heritage. Mr Ramanumanu said the goal was to mirror the exact standards set by those who came before them.
The weight of history is felt by all involved, as they strive to honour the late former president with the same dignity provided by their ancestors.
“We want to do it right as how our forefathers carried out their traditional task.”
