Tritons head coach Willie Elaisa is happy with the performance of young swimmers in the Long Course Grand Prix 1 held at the Olympic Pool yesterday.
Elaisa said the results were better than expected given that they had returned to the waters a month ago.
Matelita Naisara and Theola Kwong both top the 14-year-old 50-metre backstroke and the 100-metre freestyle.
Tiara Nasario came in first in the 16-year-old 50-meter backstroke.
In the 13-year-old boys’ 50-metre backstroke, Thaddeus Kwong and Tahune Samson both top the age group.
Erik Tokona settled in first in the 15-year-old 50 metre backstroke.
In the LC program this year, they have three grand prix and three mini meet LC competitions.
These are qualifying events for the Fiji Swimming LC open nationals scheduled for May 12-14 and the Fiji Swimming LC age group nationals scheduled for June 23-25.
The other LC event they have is the national schools swimming championship scheduled for June 9-10.
Swimmers competing in these LC competitions are securing their places in the Pacific Games training squad, which they review after every competition.
They are also trying to stake their claims on the available slots for the World Aquatics LC championships to be held in Fukuoka, Japan from July14-30 and, the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago from August 4-11.
Tritons Swim Club has groomed national swimmers such as Temafa Yalimaiwai and Hansel McCaig, who represented the country in the Commonwealth Games last year.
